Nippers is Surf Life Saving’s iconic program for children aged 5–14, designed to teach kids vital beach safety skills while keeping them active, social, and confident in the water. On the Gold Coast, our beaches can be unpredictable – giving your child the knowledge to stay safe in the surf is one of the most valuable life skills they can learn.

What Parents Need to Know Before Signing Up

Joining Nippers is simple, but there are a few key steps every family should be aware of:

1. Join a Surf Life Saving Club – Children must be members of a Surf Life Saving Club to participate in Nippers. Membership covers both the child and a parent/guardian.
2. Swim Proficiency Assessment – Because water safety is a priority, all Nippers must complete a basic swim assessment. This ensures kids are confident in the pool before moving to the surf. The required distance depends on their age group.
3. Age Groups – Children are placed into age groups based on their age as of 30 September. Nippers is open from U6 through to U14.
4. Sign On Day – This is the best time to register, meet your local club, ask questions, and get your child excited about the season ahead.
5. Uniforms & Gear – Most clubs provide a bright rash vest and cap for safety and identification on the beach. Additional gear like boards may be provided or available through the club.

When is Nippers Sign On Day?

Every year, Gold Coast Surf Life Saving Clubs host Nippers Sign On Days to welcome new families. It’s the perfect opportunity to see what Nippers is all about, meet the age managers, and get a feel for your local club.

👉 Tip: Spots can fill quickly, so it’s best to register early and come prepared with your child’s swim gear for their proficiency swim.
